Four-wave mixing in silicon wire waveguides.
We report the observation of four-wave mixing phenomenon in a simple silicon wire waveguide at the optical powers normally employed in communications systems. The maximum conversion efficiency is about -35 dB in the case of a 1.58-cm-long silicon wire waveguide. The nonlinear refractive index coefficient is found to be 9x10-18 m2/W. This value is not negligible for dense wavelength division mul...
متن کاملDegenerate four-wave mixing in silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguides.
Silicon-based plasmonic waveguides show high confinement well beyond the diffraction limit. Various devices have been demonstrated to outperform their dielectric counterparts at micrometer scales, such as linear modulators, capable of generating high field confinement and improving device efficiency by increasing access to nonlinear processes, limited by ohmic losses. By using hybridized plasmo...
متن کاملObservation of four-wave mixing in slow-light silicon photonic crystal waveguides.
Four-wave mixing is observed in a silicon W1 photonic crystal waveguide. The dispersion dependence of the idler conversion efficiency is measured and shown to be enhanced at wavelengths exhibiting slow group velocities. A 12-dB increase in the conversion efficiency is observed. Concurrently, a decrease in the conversion bandwidth is observed due to the increase in group velocity dispersion in t...
متن کاملTwo-pump four-wave mixing in silicon waveguides for broadband wavelength conversion
Four-wave mixing (FWM) in silicon waveguides is considered to be a promising effect to realize the wavelength conversion function for wavelength-division-multiplexing optical communication systems. Compared to the degenerate FWM with a single pump, the nondegenerate FWM with two pumps shows more flexibility in phase-matching condition and has more opportunities to acquire broader conversion ban...
متن کاملAll-optical Wavelength Conversion Based on Four-wave Mixing in Silicon Waveguides
All-optical wavelength conversion is investigated using fourwave mixing in silicon waveguides. The influences of nonlinear losses caused by two-photon absorption (TPA) and TPA-induced free-carrier absorption on the conversion efficiency and phase-matching condition are analyzed. The conversion bandwidth is tempted to enhance by optimizing the waveguide geometry and using the two-pump regime. An...
